In a move to enhance users’ privacy, WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new feature that will allow users to “lock chats.” The feature, which is currently under development, will be released in the future update of the app’s version, and will be available to beta testers first.
According to app-tracking website WABetainfo, the lock chats feature will enable users to hide chats and keep them hidden. Users will be able to lock specific chats using their fingerprint or passcode, providing an extra layer of protection to sensitive conversations.
Once a chat is locked, it can only be accessed using the user’s fingerprint or passcode, making it nearly impossible for anyone else to open the chat. Media files such as photos and videos sent in a locked chat won’t be saved in the phone’s gallery automatically.
This new feature will prevent others from reading and peeking at your messages, making it ideal for users who prioritize privacy. If someone else tries to open the chat without the necessary authentication, they will have to clear the chat to be able to open it.
WhatsApp has also introduced other privacy features that provide interlocking layers of protection and give users more control over their messages. These features include end-to-end encryption for personal calls and messages, disappearing messages that self-destruct, end-to-end encrypted backups for chat history, two-step verification, and the ability to block and report unwanted chats.
The app is also introducing the ability to leave groups silently. Instead of notifying the full group when a user is leaving, only the admins will be notified, making it possible to exit a group privately without making it a big deal to everyone.
Additionally, WhatsApp is introducing the ability to select who can and can’t see when a user is online. This feature will help users keep their online presence private, while still allowing them to stay connected to friends and family.
Finally, WhatsApp is enabling screenshot blocking for View Once messages for an added layer of protection. View Once is already a popular way to share photos or media that don’t need to have a permanent digital record.
All these features are part of WhatsApp’s efforts to keep conversations secure and offer new layers of protection to users. While the lock chats feature is still in development, it’s clear that WhatsApp is committed to providing users with privacy options and control over their conversations.
