Earth is a beautiful planet that provides all forms of life, from tiny microorganisms to giant whales and humans, with all the necessities required for a healthy and happy life. However, due to human actions, our planet’s health is failing, and it is crucial to provide proper attention and care to protect Earth from issues such as pollution and deforestation. To raise awareness about the importance of protecting the planet’s health, people celebrate Earth Day on April 22.

The first Earth Day event was initiated in 1970 by a senator from Wisconsin in the United States, aiming to raise public consciousness about environmental problems. This event gained momentum over time and now has over one billion people observing this day with great enthusiasm every year, with participation from approximately 192 countries. Earth Day has a different theme every year that highlights the various challenges facing our planet, and the theme for Earth Day 2023 is “Invest in Our Planet.”

The aim of the 2023 theme is to encourage institutions, governments, businesses, and more than one billion participants to focus on improving the health of our planet. The organization believes that safeguarding the planet’s health is the responsibility of every individual. Earth Day is celebrated on April 22 or on the day when the spring equinox occurs around the world. This year, Earth Day will be celebrated on April 22.

Senator Gaylord Nelson from Wisconsin in the US created a national celebration of environmental movement in the 1960s, and on April 22, 1970, he organized the first Earth Day with the help of a graduate student at Harvard University named Denis Hayes. Around 20 million people across the US attended the event, which strengthened the support for legislation such as the Clean Air Act and the Endangered Species Act.

A global Earth Day was organized in 1990 by Haynes, with more than 200 million people from 140 countries participating in the event. In present time, Earth Day Network (EDN) is spread over 20,000 partners and organizations in 190 countries. Volunteers in dozens of countries were set to plant trees, clean up trash and urge governments to do more to combat climate change to mark Earth Day 2023, as scientists warn of more extreme weather and record temperatures this year, as per a Reuters report.

In conclusion, Earth Day is an important event that raises awareness about the need to protect the planet’s health. With the 2023 theme of “Invest in Our Planet,” individuals, organizations, and governments must take action to improve the health of our planet and protect it for future generations.
