Former Prime Minister and head of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan, has accused Nawaz Sharif, the leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), of speaking out against the Supreme Court panel hearing the election delay case. In a video address, Khan stated that Sharif, a convicted fugitive sitting in London, was choosing what would be deemed acceptable and what would be discarded and arguing against the Supreme Court bench hearing the election delay issue.

Sharif had criticized the three-judge Supreme Court panel, presided over by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Umar Ata Bandial, which is deliberating the PTI’s request for a court decision authorizing elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. On March 31, Sharif had asked for a full court to consider a case against the postponement of elections in the two provinces while speaking at a news conference in London. He had also voiced mistrust for the existing bench and criticized judges’ anti-PML-N stance. Along with that, he also spoke out about his own disqualification as prime minister.

Khan emphasized the necessity for the country to stand up for the Constitution and the law, saying that if the country does not stand with the Constitution and the law, then it would not be a place worth living in. He claimed that all legal experts agreed that failing to hold elections within 90 days would be unconstitutional. Khan asserted that his adversaries were waiting for his arrest or disqualification before holding elections to ensure they had unfettered access to the corridors of power.

He expressed his concern that the current authorities would decide against holding elections even in October and demanded to know the advantages of delaying the elections until then. Khan pointed out that the country was in a downward spiral as a result of the economic crisis, and some were even dying while obtaining wheat. He emphasized the need for political stability in fostering economic growth and reiterated that holding timely elections would provide the economy with a much-needed boost.

Khan accused the high leadership of the PML-N of stating that they would not accept the ruling of the court hearing the election delay petition. According to him, if the decision was in their favor, it was correct, and if not, they would not accept it. He said that their unwillingness to comply was caused by their concern about losing in the Punjab and Sindh provinces.

The PTI leader also questioned Nawaz Sharif’s behavior towards the judiciary and cited the suo motu notice issued against Khan by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Judge Bandial. “The same judges decided against us. I made an election announcement, but the chief judge paid attention on his own. Our appeal in the suo motu case was denied,” he said. The fact that the courts opened at midnight bothered him the most, he added.

In conclusion, Imran Khan has called for the country to stand up for the Constitution and the law, emphasizing the necessity of timely elections to boost the country’s economy. He has accused Nawaz Sharif and the PML-N of speaking out against the Supreme Court panel hearing the election delay case and refusing to comply with the court’s decision. Khan has also questioned Sharif’s behavior towards the judiciary and expressed his concerns about the delay in holding elections.
