On Wednesday, prime minister Shehbaz Sharif urged for strengthening bilateral trade and economic ties with Tajikistan.

He said this at a news conference with Tajik President Emomali Rahmon, who arrived in Pakistan earlier today on a two-day visit. The two presidents had a private discussion at the Prime Minister’s House earlier in the day.

At the joint news conference where the two leaders signed memorandums of understanding (MoUs), PM Shehbaz said: “We need to work very closely with each other to expand our economic cooperation and enhance our bilateral commerce in the sphere of industry, agriculture, joint ventures, and energy cooperation.”

According to the prime minister, Tajikistan is a “gateway” to Central Asia and occupies a very “vital role” inside that continent.

He continued by saying he was looking forward to collaborating closely with Rahmon to improve rail, road, and energy linkages with Central Asian nations as well as to expedite the construction of the Casa-1000 power project.

He anticipated that the president of Tajikistan’s visit would usher in a “new era of collaboration and development” between the two nations.

The two leaders held “extremely constructive and helpful” meetings, according to PM Shehbaz, about fostering investment, fostering commerce, and fostering cross-cultural interactions.

Before being welcomed by the prime minister, President Rahmon was given a red carpet greeting upon entering the Prime Minister’s House. He received a guard of honor. Later, he added a sapling to the PM House’s lawns.
