Wahab Riaz, a renowned Pakistani Test cricketer and adviser to Punjab’s caretaker Chief Minister on sports and youth affairs, is keen on hosting a special Ramadan sports series. The 37-year-old all-rounder has been actively working towards the improvement of sports in Punjab since he took charge and frequently visits sports facilities in the region. He has also directed relevant authorities to upgrade sports grounds in Lahore.
On Sunday, Riaz announced the launch of the first-ever Ramadan sports series, which is scheduled to take place from April 7 to 11 at the Nishtar Park Sports Complex in Lahore. In a tweet, the veteran cricketer shared the tournament’s poster with his followers and fans. The series will feature events in badminton, cricket (tape ball), football, hockey, kabaddi, and table tennis, and players from across the province will compete in high-class facilities.
Riaz expressed his gratitude to the authorities for helping him launch the Ramadan series, saying, “Punjab’s best athletes in six major sports will compete for championship and win the highest prize money in our history. I want to thank Ali Randhawa and Rafia Haider, secretary sports, and all elite departments for their efforts to make it possible.”
It is worth noting that Riaz was appointed as sports minister in Punjab’s caretaker government. Before taking the oath, he had requested the provincial government to allow him to play in the recently concluded PSL 8, where he represented Peshawar under the captaincy of Babar Azam and took 10 wickets in 11 matches this year. Overall, Riaz is the highest wicket-taker in PSL history with 113 scalps.
